Tour of St Peter's Church
|
The altar in St Peter's Church was installed in time for the church’s consecration in 2006. It is made of Travertine marble, quarried and constructed in Italy and contains certified relics of Ss Peter and Paul.
Parishioner Tony Mornement coordinated the purchase of the altar, travelling to Italy to meet Arturo Vola, the director of the Italian firm of Aniene 88 SRL, in Tivoli. They selected a beautiful piece of Travertine marble and undertook the construction. The finished items were brought by road from Rome for assembly on site. |
Two sconces, part of the set donated at the time of the church’s consecration, serve as candleholders on the altar.
The stained glass window, installed in 1963, is of Loire glass from Chartres.
Canon Giffin had the splendid crucifix suspended above the chancel. The paschal candle candlestick was purchased in memory of Fr Gerald Thornton and the Stations of the Cross were installed in memory of Canon Giffin.
The ambo and chair form part of a whole altar setting designed by a parishioner.
The silver tabernacle and consecration sconces were provided by Bishop Kieran Conry, for the consecration of the church. They were previously in the chapel of St Joseph’s, Storrington, the former residence of the Bishops of Arundel and Brighton.
The statue of St Thérèse of Lisieux was originally in the Carmelite Convent in Hunston. After their move to Sclerder Abbey the nuns gave the statue to St Peter's.
The processional cross was donated in 2005 by an anonymous parishioner.
The Marian Garden was constructed in 2006 at the behest of ladies who regularly went on pilgrimage to Medjugorje. The statue of Our Lady of Lourdes came from the USA. It stands in an archway constructed by a parishioner. The garden is a place of meditation, prayer and peace.
